Back Pain Is Real. Here's What Nobody Tells You About It.
July 2025
Let's get one thing straight: back pain is real. It is not in your head. It is not imagined. If your back hurts, something is genuinely happening in your body and dismissing that would be daft.
But here is what nobody tells you at the physio, or the GP, or on the internet at half eleven at night when you cannot sleep because of it. The structure of your spine is almost never the whole story.
Studies have scanned the spines of people with zero back pain, people who feel completely grand, no complaints, living their lives, and found bulging discs, degeneration, asymmetry, all sorts. Meanwhile, other people with textbook-perfect spines on paper are in agony. The correlation between what shows up on a scan and what a person actually feels is, to put it mildly, not great.
So what is going on?
The Feldenkrais Method has a different way of looking at this. It does not ignore structure. Of course your spine matters, your discs matter, your joints matter. But it asks a question that most approaches skip entirely: how are you using that structure?
Because your nervous system is running the show. It decides how your muscles organise around your spine. It decides how much tension gets held where. It decides, based on years of habit, old injuries, stress, how you sit, how you breathe, how you brace yourself against life, what your back does all day long.
And those decisions, made thousands of times a day without your conscious input, are often where the pain is actually coming from.
Feldenkrais lessons work with this. Slowly, on the floor, with movements so small they barely feel like movement at all, your nervous system starts to get new information. It discovers that it has been holding more than it needs to. That it can organise your spine differently. That easier is available.
This does not mean Feldenkrais fixes everything. It is not a replacement for medical care. But for the vast majority of people with chronic back pain, people who have done the physio, taken the painkillers, bought the special chair, it offers something those things could not. A way to change the pattern underneath the pain.
And that, in my experience, is where the real relief lives.
