The Quiet Secret to Moving Well at Any Age

There is a story we tell ourselves about ageing and movement. It goes like this. Bodies wear out. After a certain point, you lose flexibility, you lose strength, you lose balance. This is just what happens. You manage it as best you can.

The Feldenkrais Method has been telling a different story since the 1950s, long before longevity became a billion-dollar industry and long before anyone was selling you a supplement to prove it.

Moshe Feldenkrais himself was living proof. He developed his method in part to rehabilitate his own severely damaged knee, one that conventional medicine had written off entirely. He went on to move with ease, teach prolifically, and demonstrate well into old age that the nervous system's capacity to learn does not diminish the way we assume it does. It can always find a better way, if you give it the right conditions.

This is the heart of what Feldenkrais offers for ageing and longevity. Not exercise. Not stretching. Not strength training, though none of those are bad things. But learning. Yochanan Rywerant, one of Feldenkrais's earliest and most meticulous students, wrote at length about what he called parasitic action. The excess muscular effort we layer onto simple movements over years of habit, stress, and accumulated compensation. You reach for a glass and your whole shoulder braces. You stand up from a chair and your neck tightens. None of this is necessary. None of it is inevitable. But it costs us, quietly, continuously, and as we age we have less surplus energy to spend on effort that serves no purpose. Feldenkrais lessons, gently and systematically, reduce this excess. The result is not just less pain. It is more energy. More ease. More of yourself available for the things that actually matter to you.

Practitioners working in elder care have reported for decades what researchers are beginning to document properly. That the quality of movement matters more than the quantity as we age. A person who moves with ease, with good proprioception, with the ability to recover their balance and carry no unnecessary tension, ages better than someone who exercises hard but moves with habitual bracing and restriction. Balance in particular is something the Feldenkrais Method addresses directly, and this is not a small thing. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in adults over 65, and they are largely a function of how well the nervous system knows where the body is in space and how quickly it can respond.

Work by practitioners and researchers connected to the Feldenkrais community has pointed consistently to improvements in older adults across balance, gait, pain levels, and something that surprised even those studying it: cognitive function. The connection between movement quality and brain health is increasingly well established. Varied, attentive movement, the kind Feldenkrais lessons are built on, stimulates neuroplasticity in ways that repetitive exercise does not. Your brain, it turns out, learns when your body does.

For many older adults, the deepest fear is not pain. It is dependency. Losing the ability to do things for themselves. To get up from the floor. To reach overhead. To walk without fear. To travel. Feldenkrais addresses this not by building strength in isolated muscles but by improving the whole system's ability to organise itself. Students regularly report that movements they thought they had lost become available again. Not because they got stronger, but because they got smarter in how they move.

This is what we call förderung von Eigenständigkeit, the fostering of independence, and it is one of the most quietly transformative things the method does. Particularly in the second half of life.

One of the things Moshe Feldenkrais understood and insisted on is that the nervous system retains its capacity to learn throughout life. Neuroplasticity does not switch off at 60 or 70 or 80. What changes is the conditions required for learning to happen. Feldenkrais creates those conditions. Slowness. Attention. Reduced effort. Genuine curiosity. No pressure to perform or to keep up.

A student in their seventies who comes to their first ATM class will not be asked to push through anything. They will be invited to notice. And noticing, real careful unhurried noticing, is how the nervous system learns at any age.

The Feldenkrais Method does not promise to reverse ageing. Nothing honest does that. What it offers is something arguably more useful. A way to age with skill. To keep learning. To remain curious about what the body can do rather than resigned to what it cannot.

In a world obsessed with longevity supplements and biohacking protocols, that might sound almost too simple.

But simplicity, as Feldenkrais knew, is often where the real intelligence lives.
